Today’s Big Story

What We Eat In a Day

People are tuning into to what’s on people’s plate

Remember a few years into Twitter and Instagram, when people complained about how lame it was that people were just using social media to share a photo of their lunch. Boy, that seems quaint, doesn’t it? Perhaps that’s why we’re met with the sudden desire to go back …

Because the “What I Eat in a Day” trend has suddenly spawned a million-plus videos over on TikTok. According to Fast Company, office snack content is hooking viewers online with captions such as “WIEIAD” (what I eat in a day) and “what I ate at my 8-4,” featuring office workers’ time-stamped eating schedules. Employees post montages of their morning coffee and breakfast of choice, followed by a time-lapse video of a variety of snacks and beverages consumed at their desk. Some videos have voice-overs, some have light jolly music, and others keep it monotonous, complete with keyboard ASMR.

And if the worker’s employer offers free food (certainly a step above the leftovers I plan on heating up later), they’re sharing that, too. “Rating everything I ate at the office today,” one TikTok creator who works at the tech company Carta recently posted.

So what’s the appeal, exactly? Well, some viewers might be looking for digital lunchtime companions. Others could be interested in new meals and recipes. As far as office food videos, they may appeal to people who don’t work at big-spending companies and want to see how the other half live, right?

You might think the employers wouldn’t appreciate the videos, but it could actually work as recruitment bait. One recent survey found 50% of people would be more likely to accept a job that fed them and the prospect of complimentary snacks was enough to entice people back to the office after the pandemic.

Justice Department Opens a Criminal Investigation of Fed Chair

The investigation is said to center on renovations of the Federal Reserve’s headquarters in Washington

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation of Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome H. Powell, the central bank said Sunday, tied to the central bank’s renovation of its headquarters along the National Mall. Powell accused the Justice Department of using the threat of criminal prosecution to pressure the central bank to lower interest rates, describing newly issued grand jury subpoenas as an unprecedented challenge to the Fed’s independence.

President Donald Trump denied having any knowledge of the DOJ’s investigation. “I don’t know anything about it, but he’s certainly not very good at the Fed, and he’s not very good at building buildings,” Trump said of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell in a brief interview with NBC News on Sunday night.

Trump, who originally nominated Powell to serve as Fed chair during his first term in 2017, has spent much of his second term attacking and threatening to fire the Fed chief for not slashing interest rates fast enough. The Fed has moved slowly to lower rates, as it weighs a weakening labor market with persistently elevated inflation that has made its job more difficult. He actually told the New York Times in an interview last week that he had decided on who he wants to replace Mr. Powell as Fed chair. He is expected to soon announce his decision.

Hundreds of Iranian Protesters Feared Killed

Iran’s troubled regime tries to cling to power as Trump ratchets up pressure

As furious protests enter their third week, bringing Iran to the precipice of change, the country’s theocratic government is trying to survive by harshly cracking down on the widening demonstrations. CNN reports that Iran’s ruling clergy have weathered huge protests many times before. But the longstanding regime’s grasp on power now appears more tenuous than ever as the swelling opposition movement demands substantive change. The protests initially centered on economic grievances but have since evolved into a broader movement against the regime that has controlled Iran for decades.

Now, hundreds of demonstrators have been killed, rights groups said Sunday, as reports of a dramatic escalation in the use of deadly force by security forces began to break through a communications blackout imposed by authorities. Trump administration national security officials, meanwhile, were preparing to discuss options, including possible military strikes, a senior U.S. official told the Washington Post.

According to three U.S. officials, the president has been presented with preliminary plans ranging from possible strikes to other options that would not entail military action. Speaking to NBC News aboard Air Force One as it approached Washington, D.C., Trump said he’s receiving hourly reports on violence against protesters. The president said a meeting with Iran's leadership was in the works after officials from the country "called to negotiate" on Saturday.

Yes, But:

Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Sunday against such strikes. If the country were attacked, he said, it could target the U.S., Israel and international shipping lanes.

What Went Down at the Golden Globes

Award season has officially kicked off …

Nikki Glaser did it again. She came out swinging as host of the 2026 Golden Globes, kicking off the ceremony with jokes aimed at Leonardo DiCaprio, CBS News and Hollywood at large over the Epstein files. “Just like the podcasters nominated tonight, I should not be allowed to be this close to Julia Roberts,” she said, and got the big laugh she was looking for.

Speaking of which, the Globes’ new category drew backlash after controversial stars Joe Rogan, Candace Owens and Megyn Kelly were nominated, but the more congenial Amy Poehler ended up winning. The whole night is a champagne-soaked party featuring some of the biggest names in film and television, even if the awards won’t exactly forecast the Oscars. Before the show, fashion took the center stage on the red carpet: From classic black-tie to offbeat (but extremely cool) riffs on red-carpet dressing, the guys looked pretty good.

Paul Thomas Anderson’s film, One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio took home the win for Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. Hamnet, which won two awards, won the Golden Globe for Best Picture, Drama. KPop Demon Hunters took the Animated award and Timothée Chalamet got the statue for his role in Marty Supreme. For TV, HBO’s The Pitt took the top honor for Drama while Apple TV’s The Studio won for Best Musical or Comedy Series. See all the winners over at Vulture.

FYI:

After last year’s relatively apolitical ceremony, some celebrities donned anti-ICE pins on the red carpet and on stage.

What We’re Buying

A hoodie

This isn’t just another hoodie, it’s the one that feels broken-in before you even put it on. Proof’s Patina Hoodie ($138) comes pre-washed to a lived-in softness that hugs without sagging; the fabric has texture and depth, not the flat, new-out-of-the-box feel most hoodies settle for. Cut with a relaxed silhouette that still looks intentional, it layers under jackets or stands alone as the weekend’s default. Plus, performance attributes like sweat-wicking and anti-odor properties make this a quiet upgrade to your gym fit, too. It’s comfort that actually looks like style.
