Today’s Big Story

Amazon in an Instant?

The retailer is sending out orders as fast as pizza delivery

And you thought Prime delivery was fast. Amazon is now piloting a new, “ultra-fast” delivery service in Seattle and Philadelphia that promises to get your order to you in around 30 minutes. The near-instant delivery will also apply to cosmetics, pet food and some electronics, covering thousands of items, the retail giant said.

TechCrunch says the new “ultra-fast” delivery option will allow Amazon to better compete with services like DoorDash, Uber Eats and Instacart. Customers will be able to order a range of different items, everything from milk, eggs and fresh produce, to toothpaste, cosmetics, pet treats, even electronics and seasonal items, over-the-counter medicines. It does sound convenient, right?

Prime members can choose the fast delivery option for a $3.99 fee per order, while non-Prime members will have to pay $13.99. Orders below $15 will include a small-basket fee of $1.99. After placing an order, customers can track their deliveries and tip drivers through the app.

“This approach prioritizes the safety of employees picking and packing orders, reduces the distance delivery partners need to travel, and enables faster delivery times,” the retailer told Quartz. Amazon will use “flex” drivers at its Seattle location. They are gig economy workers who are not employed by Amazon and use their own vehicles.

The Daily Mail points out that the Amazon Now trial comes after the company has been closing a number of its in-person stores, with a handful of Amazon Fresh outlets shuttering in recent months. It also made layoffs at Whole Foods, which it bought in 2017.

FYI:

This follows Amazon’s launch of a 15-minute delivery service in the United Arab Emirates in October. Those orders were arriving in as little as six minutes.

Trump’s Return to Gas

The president says he is rolling back fuel efficiency standards for vehicles

President Donald Trump on Wednesday threw the weight of the federal government behind vehicles that burn gasoline rather than electric cars, gutting one of the country’s most significant efforts to address climate change … while simultaneously thrusting the automobile industry into greater uncertainty.

From the Oval Office, he said his administration would “reset” fuel efficiency standards for passenger cars in an effort to put a lid on rising auto prices, as the White House battles inflation and an affordability crisis. Of course, Trump is under political pressure to address affordability concerns after Democrats swept major races last month, fueled by voters’ frustration with rising prices. He says this move will save consumers money by making cars cheaper. But experts say it’s unclear how fast prices could fall. The updated standards still must go through a formal rule-making process before being finalized, likely in 2026.

Previous research from Consumer Reports has challenged the argument that regulations make cars more expensive. Stringent fuel economy standards also carry an economic benefit in the form of lower fuel costs over time. According to NPR, the administration has already been working to roll back tailpipe standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency, which are designed to cut pollution from vehicles. During the second Trump presidency, Congress has also eliminated the consumer tax credit for purchasing electric vehicles and decided to end a tax credit for installing an EV charger in June 2026, earlier than planned.

The back-and-forth policy changes have put U.S. automakers in a difficult position, as analysts say it prevents the industry from long-term planning for the future.

The End of the Year Music Battle

Are you Team Spotify or Team Apple?

The highly anticipated Spotify Wrapped dropped on Wednesday with new social features, IRL pop-ups and AI-powered listening stats. Meanwhile, Apple released their version of the popular look-back feature, Apple Music Replay. This year, the feature includes even more listening habits, including “Discovery,” which highlights new artists users listened to, and “Loyalty,” which spotlights artists that users have kept coming back to over the last 12 months.

Wrapped has become something of a cultural holiday that now doubles as a window into a music ecosystem overwhelmed by volume, driven by algorithms and reshaped by AI. Axios spoke with a music scholar and former major-label exec who explained how Spotify’s dominance—and Wrapped's design—reflect a fast-changing, increasingly crowded industry. Did you know that streaming platforms now see 100,000 to 120,000 new tracks uploaded every day—roughly 1.5 million a week?! AI-generated tracks already make up nearly one in five uploads on some platforms.

Wrapped’s new interactive features—clubs, leaderboards and that brutally subjective “listening age”—are designed to gamify fandom (and certainly keep Spotify central to how people define their musical identities). For the first time, Wrapped is adding a live multiplayer feature to compare your listening data with friends. And Apple Music makes it easy to send your stats to your friends with just the tap of a finger.

Yes, And:

Spotify also released the platform’s top 50 most popular podcasts of 2025, with Joe Rogan reigning at No. 1 for the fifth straight year.

A New G-Wagen Convertible Is Coming

The new Cabriolet model could arrive as soon as next year

The Mercedes G-Wagen family is about to grow with two new major products: a smaller sibling, and a drop-top variant of the brand's flagship body-on-frame SUV. Now, thanks to a new official teaser image that Mercedes just released, we have a good sense of what the G-Class Cabriolet will look like with its top up.

Thankfully, the classic rugged look has been preserved. The G-Class Cabriolet appears to be a four-door sport-ute that retains the boxy look of the standard Geländewagen. The automaker says that it’s begun real-world testing of the upcoming G-Wagen convertible. That means that enthusiasts will no longer have to rely on restoration shops and tuners to get their hands on a drop-top version of the 4×4 in the very near future. Once complete, prototypes will be dispatched to Sweden, where they will undergo more rigorous winter testing through the country’s snowy landscapes. The testing is required to ensure the elegant off-roader can deliver the same driving experience as the hard-top version.

In addition to the new drop-top G-Wagen, the badge is also expanding into a sub-brand with a smaller "baby g" model, too. That car was teased during a September presentation, where it looked substantially smaller than either full-sized G model. I’m excited to see (and hopefully eventually drive) either.

FYI:

The G-Wagen was originally commissioned by the Shah of Iran in the 1970s as a military vehicle.
