Today’s Big Story
Whey Protein Is Running Out
The race to add protein to nearly everything is finally causing problems

You’ve noticed it too, right? Protein is showing up everywhere these days. It’s getting packed into chips and popcorn, waffles and even lattes. But consumers can’t get enough of it. Unfortunately, that insatiable demand now has the industry grappling with shortages and skyrocketing prices of whey protein. And it’s forcing some manufacturers to halt production or reformulate their top-selling products with alternative ingredients.
Bloomberg reports that the protein mania that has swept the food industry in the U.S. and many other parts of the world is starting to run smack into the realities of a supply chain that is struggling to keep up. As the biggest food companies raced to roll out higher-protein versions of beloved items, whey protein became a star ingredient. That’s because it’s a complete protein that dissolves well, is digested easily and can be added to a variety of foods.
But now there isn’t enough of it to go around. Some suppliers already are sold out for the remainder of the year, according to the US Department of Agriculture. What is available has shot up in price: Offers for high-protein whey concentrate have jumped more than 40% on average just in the last couple of months.
And as prices jump and supplies dwindle, shoppers are flocking to Costco to get a good deal. The wholesale club has been broadening its selection of protein-packed foods and drinks, and the products are proving to be a huge hit.
The good news? The shortage could likely be just a quick blip. The North American dairy industry is undergoing a $12 billion expansion that’s projected to close the current supply-demand gap in the near future, since whey protein is a byproduct of cheese making

Watching the Primaries
Midterm matchups take shape in California, Iowa, New Jersey and 3 other states
High-stakes primary races to determine control of Congress and statehouses brought some surprises and uncertainty on Tuesday. In California, the top two spots for governor in the nation’s most populous state remained undetermined as Republican Steve Hilton had the narrowest of leads over Democrat Xavier Becerra.
Meanwhile in Iowa, Republican businessman Zach Lahn, who entered the primary race for governor as a virtual unknown, stunned U.S. Rep. Randy Feenstra, the party’s expected nominee. Though endorsed by President Trump, Feenstra conceded the race to Lahn at a watch party before the race was officially called. The early results we’re getting, not just in Iowa but also in New Jersey, are a good sign for the establishment wing of the Democratic Party going into the fall.
Also, former Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland is also poised to make history after winning the New Mexico Democratic gubernatorial primary, putting her on track to become the first Native American woman to serve as a governor.
Meanwhile:
Karen Bass will advance to the November runoff in LA mayoral race, and Spencer Pratt did better than expected.

The Rise of Solo-Maxxing
Gen Z seems to be embracing single life for very sad reasons
It seems that everyone is “maxxing” in one way or another. But one particular trend that’s enticing many Gen Zers is “solo-maxxing,” aka leading a solo lifestyle and opting out of dating. There are multiple reasons why someone might select a life of solitude, from financial concerns and lifestyle preferences to dating burnout and a fear of getting hurt.
Vice says it “sad”, but also spoke with experts who offered that it can be a healthy lifestyle choice, so long as the motive stems from empowerment rather than fear. Additionally, they add, rigidity is a signal that solo-maxxing is a protective coping strategy rather than a form of self-actualization.
Fortune points out that as most Americans weather inflation, tariffs, and a rising cost of living, it feels as if there’s little room in their budgets for discretionary spending. And that means modern dating is taking a hit. When dinner and drinks or a movie or even just getting coffee feels indulgent, young people aren’t interested in risking it on that quasi-stranger from a dating app.
