What’s in your carry-on when you board a plane? No doubt, you have your phone, maybe a tablet or a power bank/portable charger. Maybe a vape. The lithium-ion battery packs are increasingly popular among travelers looking to keep their phones and other electronics juiced up. But the power banks are also a leading cause of cabin fires, sparking more incidents than any other rechargeable device.

While the threat isn’t new, the industry’s assessment of the risks has heightened as passengers bring more devices onboard. In the U.S., incidents have more than doubled since 2019, according to Federal Aviation Administration data. Figures for 2026 are on track to surpass last year’s record, with roughly two confirmed events recorded each week since January.

And the Wall Street Journal reports that recently, airlines across the globe rolled out new rules aimed at reducing the risk of cabin fires ahead of the peak summer season. American Airlines, Delta and Southwest have all banned power banks from overhead lockers and restricted their use in-flight. Germany’s Lufthansa, Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have taken similar steps.

Aviation regulators have also issued guidelines to flight crews and sought to raise awareness of the dangers among passengers. When an Alaskan Airlines passenger’s power bank burst into flames just minutes after takeoff, she instinctively tossed her burning phone and charger into the aisle, where flight attendants scrambled to get them into a fireproof bag to quell the blaze.

Incidents like this have spurred regulators to introduce a spate of new rules and procedures. Those included a ban on e-cigarettes and power banks in checked luggage, as well as restrictions on the use of portable batteries onboard. Apparently, devices are at most risk when they are overcharged, malfunctioning or damaged, which can cause components to break down and release excess heat. This triggers a process called thermal runaway, where rapidly rising temperatures cause the battery to spontaneously combust.

Will things ever calm down? President Donald Trump on Monday imposed 50% tariffs on most Canadian goods, declaring that Canada has unfairly discriminated against American autos, alcohol and dairy products.

Experts are saying that the move could unleash a new wave of economic chaos, with risks of higher inflation and further fraying of relations between two nations that had been closely woven together before Trump’s return to the White House. The White House said that the tariffs were a response to the country’s “discriminatory treatment of American products.” Some sectors and goods, including energy, potash and fish or critical minerals, will be exempt from the new tariffs.

The tariffs will go into effect in 30 days (unless Trump reverses course, as he’s done in the past). They’ll be imposed on a range of Canadian exports, including wine, hockey sticks, cement, dairy products, plywood, paper and furniture. The administration is preparing to issue more global tariffs, perhaps as soon as this week. After the Supreme Court struck down his tariffs in February, Trump used another legal measure to impose a 10 percent tariff globally. That duty is set to expire on Friday, but quickly be replaced by other tariffs.

For a brand distributed in more than 200 markets, where more than 2.2 billion servings of Coca-Cola beverages are consumed every day, maintaining a cohesive identity is no small task. Creative agency Jones Knowles Ritchie was in charge of the overhaul, amplifying the brand’s most iconic assets, including the iconic ribbon and script font. The brief was simple: “Make Coca-Cola more Coca-Cola.”

I’d say they nailed it. They spoke with CreativeBloq about the process, saying “it should feel familiar because it’s built on the symbols people have loved for generations, but also fresher, more confident and more expressive.” And one of my favorite marketing strategists pointed out how the secondary typeface looked suspiciously like Marlboro, adding “They took the fridge cig meme literally.”
