Today’s Big Story
The Future of Mobility
Who needs to own a car when auto subscription services continue to evolve

These are uncertain economic times. And one of the most expensive bills people have is their car payments, right? Perhaps that’s why a significant number—nearly half—of younger consumers in many markets are at least somewhat interested in giving up vehicle ownership altogether in favor of a car subscription service, according to recent Deloitte research.
These consumers may be looking for a mobility solution that is more affordable, convenient, digital and personalized. That’s how Rodolfo Dominguez, managing director and Auto Tech practice leader with Deloitte, explained it on the “That Makes Cents” podcast. “The industry has made leaps and bounds in terms of vehicle technology and exciting products, but the experience of shopping for, owning, and financing vehicles still has a long way to go,” he says.
While early vehicle subscription services targeted luxury or EV shoppers, a new market has emerged over the past few years geared to people looking for the ease of a single monthly all-inclusive subscription payment with fewer commitments. And Forbes notes that the trends do point towards this type of ownership, with increased urbanization and more flexible working patterns.
This new all-inclusive car subscription service market is experiencing significant growth, according to analysts. In fact, over the next ten years, the market is expected to grow into a $22 billion dollar industry. And, I have to admit, there seems to be a lot of upsides: A subscription frees you from haggling at dealerships, managing repair bills, and navigating long-term loans. Many programs allow you to switch cars—an SUV for the holidays, a sedan for daily commutes—without the hassle or cost of buying and selling. You won’t have to worry about annual registration paperwork, either, as most providers handle these administrative details for you.
But that freedom isn’t cheap. Subscriptions regularly cost more per month than comparable leases or auto loans—often 30% or more above a lease payment, according to Money’s analysis of subscription vs. leasing costs.
What Doesn't Work: | Fewer drivers than ever want to pay for in-car subscriptions. |
Israel Launches Offensive
The military says its expanded operation in Gaza City has begun and warns residents to leave
Israel launched a long-anticipated ground offensive into Gaza City early Tuesday morning (local time), as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seeks to end the war against Hamas with military force instead of diplomacy. After a night of heavy airstrikes, the Israeli military announced the operation’s goal “to destroy Hamas’ military infrastructure” and warned residents to move south.
The size of the troop movement isn’t clear and analysts said this was only the initial phase of the ground operation. “It’s just the first step,” said Yaron Buskila, a lieutenant colonel in Israel’s military reserves and chief executive of Israel Defense and Security Forum, a security-oriented think tank. “It’s airstrikes and artillery and some ground forces but we will see more in the next days getting in.”
At the same time, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio left Israel and arrived in the energy-rich nation of Qatar, where he planned to meet with its ruling emir as the nation is still incensed over Israel’s strike last week that killed five Hamas members and a local security official. While Arab and Muslim nations denounced the strike at a summit Monday, they stopped short of any major action targeting Israel, highlighting the challenge of diplomatically pressuring any change in Israel’s conduct in the grinding Israel-Hamas war. Egypt, however, has begun to escalate its language against Israel, referring to it widely Tuesday as the “enemy” for the first time in years.
FYI: | An independent United Nations inquiry has concluded that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. |
Another Government Shutdown?
Why it might happen this time
A standoff over how to prevent a government shutdown intensified Monday as President Donald Trump called on Republicans to write a funding bill on their own and cut Democrats out of the process. But any funding bill, including a stopgap to buy more time, requires 60 votes to pass the Senate, where Republicans control 53 seats and therefore need at least seven Democratic votes.
According to The Hill, the plan for a clean continuing resolution is facing criticism from some House Republicans, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene who said on social media that Congress “should not pass a CR,” and Rep. Victoria Spartz, who said she does not want a stopgap to end right before the Thanksgiving holiday, expressing worries it might lead to an omnibus spending package.
Intelligencer points out that Democrats are acutely aware that a spending bill to keep the government open is their only point of leverage “in a Congress where nearly every other kind of business is conducted via special rules that prohibit Senate filibusters.” But in a nearly identical situation in March, the GOP offered zero concessions to get those votes, and after lots of empty talk about resistance, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer rounded up enough votes from his party to help Republicans break a brief filibuster and have their way.
